About the International Council of Mental Health Nurses

WHO WE ARE

The International Council of Mental Health Nurses (ICMHN) is a global collaborative organisation established to advance mental health nursing through leadership, advocacy, education, research, and international partnership.

The organisation was formed in recognition of the urgent global mental health crisis and the need for stronger visibility, recognition, and leadership for mental health nurses internationally. Mental health nurses remain one of the largest professional groups within mental healthcare systems globally, yet continue to experience under-representation within policy, governance, and leadership structures.

ICMHN brings together mental health nursing leaders, educators, researchers, clinicians, professional organisations, and lived experience collaborators to strengthen the profession and improve mental health outcomes worldwide.

  • Workforce shortages
  • Burnout and occupational violence
  • Limited leadership representation
  • Educational inequities
  • Stigma associated with mental illness and mental health nursing
  • Epistemic injustice and professional invisibility
  • Underinvestment in mental healthcare systems
  • Climate-related mental health impacts
  • Rising global mental distress and complexity of care

ICMHN exists to respond collectively and strategically to these challenges.
